Yamaha has unveiled its latest innovation, the Y-AMT (Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission). This groundbreaking technology, set to debut in a new variant of the MT-09 with the Y-AMT in Japan by the end of this year, automates the clutch and gearshift operations for motorcycles.
The Y-AMT eliminates the need for a clutch lever and shift pedal, streamlining gear changes to a single lever on the handlebars. This setup allows riders to enjoy seamless gear shifts, without the need of traditional clutch operations.
The Y-AMT system features both a manual MT mode, where riders can hand-operate the lever to shift gears, and an automatic AT mode, which handles gear changes automatically. This dual-mode system is intelligent enough to adapt to various riding environments, whether on city streets, highways, or winding roads, and accommodates changes in weather or the rider’s condition. Both modes offer quick and responsive gear shifts, ensuring sporty performance without compromise.
Since introducing the world’s first automated manual transmission for motorcycles in 2006 with the Yamaha Chip Controlled Shift (YCC-S), Yamaha has continued to refine its technology.
Key Features of the Y-AMT
- Swift and Responsive Mechanism: The Y-AMT automates gear changes via actuators, retaining the satisfying shifting feel of manual transmissions. The system uses the engine control unit (ECU) and motor control unit (MCU) to coordinate optimal shifting and clutch operations, delivering quick gear changes with minimal shift shock.
- Optimal Performance at High RPMs: By not fully disengaging the clutch in certain situations and incorporating a spring into the shift rod, the Y-AMT achieves shorter shift times and reduced shift shock, offering a natural and responsive shifting feel.
- Manual and Automatic Modes: The system includes an MT mode for manual shifting and an AT mode for automatic shifting, selectable via the handlebar switch. MT mode allows riders to enjoy the thrill of manual gear changes without operating a clutch or shift pedal, while AT mode reduces the operational burden, ideal for urban riding and long tours.
- Compact and Lightweight Design: The Y-AMT system is lightweight, slim, and compact, weighing approximately 2.8 kg. It integrates seamlessly into the base vehicle without compromising its styling or handling characteristics.
The new MT-09 Y-AMT, equipped with this advanced transmission system, promises to enhance the riding experience, making it more accessible and enjoyable for a wide range of motorcyclists.
