On July 20, Kawasaki made history by conducting the world’s first public demonstration run of a hydrogen ICE (internal combustion engine) motorcycle by a mass-production motorcycle manufacturer. This landmark event took place at the renowned Suzuka Circuit.
The hydrogen ICE motorcycle represents the culmination of extensive research initiated in March 2023. Following rigorous test runs earlier this year, the public demonstration run showcased the advanced capabilities of this innovative machine. The motorcycle is powered by a hydrogen engine derived from the 998 cm3 In-Line Four Supercharged Engine used in Kawasaki’s Ninja H2. Significant modifications were made to the engine to facilitate the direct injection of hydrogen fuel into the cylinders. Additionally, the motorcycle’s chassis was specially designed to accommodate hydrogen fuel canisters and an integrated hydrogen fuel supply system.
Hydrogen ICE motorcycles, such as this one, operate on hydrogen combustion, delivering the rumble and pulsating sensation that riders crave while primarily emitting water. This breakthrough is part of Kawasaki Motors’ broader carbon-neutral initiative, with the goal of making hydrogen ICE motorcycles a viable option for riders by the early 2030s.
Kawasaki Motors is a full member of HySE (Hydrogen Small mobility & Engine technology), a research association dedicated to advancing hydrogen technology. The association is actively engaged in foundational research on hydrogen engines, hydrogen filling systems, and fuel supply systems, aiming to develop hydrogen-powered small mobility vehicles, including motorcycles.
To bolster the Kawasaki brand and align with societal needs, Kawasaki Motors is committed to providing products and services that promote carbon neutrality. The company continues to explore all possibilities to bring happiness and joy to everyone impacted by Kawasaki.
