Kaipara 600 Adv Ride -2021
Circle Anzac Weekend in your Calendar boys and girls as the tides are good to go for that weekend -Saturday & Sunday April 24th & 25th 2021
The 4th running of the Kaipara 700, a 2-day 680 km ADV ride around both sides of the Kaipara harbour. Run in the reverse direction this year on the Saturday.
Accommodation for both Friday and Saturday nights is at the Wellsford Inn, Hotel. Clean and cheap fully made up rooms, and we get to ride without carrying luggage on Saturday. Single Rooms from $60.00 – Twin share rooms from $40.00 per person – Contact them on 09 423 8046. Or if you require something a bit fancier the Sun Valley motel is 600m away with lots of different room options.
An early morning 8.00am start on Saturday as we head through some tight and twisty gravel roads on the way to Dargaville. ( These roads were used as special stages when the WRC international car rally used to come to NZ and are still part of Rally of Whangarei ).
From there down to Pouto Point and onto the beach. A visit up to NZs oldest wooden light house at the top of the sand dunes ( for the adventurous ) and then carry on up the beach for 55 km
s ( having a play on the way ) to Baylys beach.
Lunch and refuel in Dargaville then we wind our way back towards Maungaturoto via some more awesome gravel roads that are a a mixture of tight & twisty and then open and fast.
Back to Wellsford for a well-earned beer or 3 :drink:beer:drink
The pub does a pretty good Pub type
meal ( I can recommend the $25 Steak egg & chips ) or there are plenty of takeaway bars and cafes within staggering distance.:dukegirl
Saturday Ride Distance around 480 km`s
Sunday Morning, a more leisurely start at 9.00 am
Leave Wellsford, a quick visit to Port Albert and then head down to Hellensville via some more tight and twisty gravel roads and head up to the top of south head.
A gnarly little sand track takes us onto Muriwai beach at Wilsons Rd for a 30 odd km ride down the beach into the village of Muriwai itself.
Lunch at the Sand Dunz café and we should be all done and dusted by 2.00 pm to allow us all time to get home before dark ( with the bonus this year of having Monday off as a holiday to recover ).
Sunday Distance 205 km`s.
Suitable for both big and small Adv Bikes ( though if you want to try the optional challenge of the sand dunes up to the lighthouse you will need knobblies )
Maximum Fuel distances between Petrol stations of no more than 190 km`s.
This will be a corner man style ride but I will also have a GPS track available for those who want it.
You will need to apply for a permit to drive on the Muriwai beach on the Sunday ( Permit is free and takes a couple of minutes online ) see link….. https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz…riving-permit-muriwai-karioitahi-beaches.aspx
Similar ride to 2019 but in reverse direction on the Saturday.
See details from 2019 in link below.
